mokojam

Co-creation runs on facilitators, and enterprises never have enough of them. mokojam packages what a facilitator knows so someone doing it for the first time can still run the room.

The interface has one chance to be obvious. The facilitator is already standing in front of the room when they need it.

The problem

Co-creation is how large organisations get customers, partners and employees into the same room and out of it with something worth building. The bottleneck is never enthusiasm, it is facilitation: knowing which method to reach for, how long it takes, what to hand people, and what to do when the room stalls. That knowledge takes years, and it lives in a small number of heads.

mokojam is Cando's own venture and it starts from a specific bet: that the expertise can be packaged. The team behind it are coaches and facilitators who had spent 15+ years running sessions for top-500 enterprises, so the raw material existed. Turning it into a product is a design problem before it is a software one. Hundreds of methods out of Design Thinking, User Centred Design and Agile Development have to be distilled into a library someone can actually choose from, and the tool that assembles them has to serve a nervous first-timer and an expert facilitator at the same time, without slowing either of them down.

What the product has to carry

The scope is unusually wide for a single interaction system, because the product follows a workshop all the way from planning it to standing in the room running it.

  1. 1

A method library, distilled from hundreds, with each method carrying its own step-by-step guide, timings, benefits, facilitation tips, material lists and print templates.

  2. 2

Recipes: proven method combinations for a recurring challenge, graded by experience level from beginner through trainer to expert, and scaled from a one-hour ideation session to a multi-day design sprint.

  3. 3

A workshop planner where you drag methods into an agenda, and the timeline and total duration assemble themselves, multi-day sprints included.

  4. 4

Automatic generation of the matching boards in Miro, Mural and the rest, so the plan and the canvas are never out of sync.

  5. 5

Interactive apps that live inside Miro rather than beside it: a Sticky Note Printer, a Sticky Note Scanner, an Importance/Difficulty matrix, a presentation mode.

The constraint that shaped the system

Two audiences, one interface, and no time to read.

A beginner needs the method taught to them at the moment they use it. An expert needs that same teaching out of the way. Both are looking at the screen mid-session with a room waiting, which rules out the usual escape hatch of putting the depth behind a help page.

Why it does not stop at the screen

Hybrid was the part that pushed the design past a normal web product. A workshop where half the room is physical and half is remote breaks every co-creation method that assumes one shared surface, so mokojam closed the loop in hardware: a printer that prints Miro's sticky notes onto real sticky notes, and a live camera feed that detects the colour, object and text of the notes on a physical wall and writes them back into the board.

That meant the interaction system had to hold together across three surfaces that share no design language of their own: a web app, apps embedded inside someone else's canvas, and a physical room with printers and equipment in it. Consistency across that spread is what makes the product feel like one thing rather than a bundle.

My contribution

  • Led product and interaction design as the single design owner.
  • Established the core interaction patterns and the reusable component set the product is built on.
  • Prioritised the flows that carry the most weight and took friction out of the everyday path through them.
  • Documented the patterns so that new features slotted into the system instead of fighting it, the thing that decides whether a system survives its second year.
  • Directed and edited the launch trailer submitted with the Best of Swiss Web entry.

Where it went

mokojam won Silver for Innovation and Bronze for both Creativity and Productivity at Best of Swiss Web 2023.

It went on to be deployed as tailored, white-labelled toolboxes inside large organisations. UBS Wealth Management's Head of Co-Creation reports 110+ projects and 680 stakeholders supported through their customised toolbox; the Swiss federal customs office (BAZG) used it to raise UX maturity across 240 SAFe team members on one of the government's largest digital transformation programmes. mokojam's own figure for the platform is over 1,700 sessions planned and executed.
